I’m both a clinician and a parent, which means I see autism from two sides that don’t always meet in the middle. Over the past 10 years, I’ve been the clinical lead for the under-5s autism service at a major hospital in North East England, and I’ve loved working alongside hundreds of families as they navigate those crucial early years. My role has given me a front-row seat to the latest research, assessments, and interventions, but honestly, it’s being a parent that keeps me real. What matters most isn’t what works in theory; it’s what actually helps on a Tuesday morning when your child is overwhelmed, or during those moments when you’re just trying to get through the day.
This blog also includes a guide to the genetics of autism, something I think deserves far more attention than it often gets in clinic settings. The advances in genetic understanding over recent years have been remarkable, and genetic counselling and appropriate testing can genuinely transform outcomes for children and their families.
Through Practical Autism Research, I want to bridge that gap between academic studies and real life. I’ll be reviewing research that can actually help us support our autistic children, and just as importantly, empower them to understand themselves and speak up for what they need.
